Things to do in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf Culture

Across Düsseldorf, there are countless places worth visiting for those interested in discovering the city’s culture. The Tonhalle concert hall and planetarium offers concerts under the stars, while the Rheinturm observation tower boasts 360 degree panoramic views of the city, as well as functioning as the world's largest decimal clock.

One of Düsseldorf's most popular activities is a walk along the scenic Rhine Embankment Promenade, finishing with a relaxing seat on the large steps of the Burgplatz. This 1.5km pedestrian walkway leads you neatly into the Media Harbour which contains plenty of bars, cafés and some of the most modern architecture in the city. Keep an eye out for the mesmerising series of curved office blocks called Der Neue Zollhof, designed by famous architect Frank Gehry.

Those who love to shop will enjoy Königsallee, the city’s most elegant shopping street. This chestnut tree-lined avenue by the city's canal is lined by high-end and boutique shops, as well as quaint footbridges across the water.

Explore Düsseldorf Old Town

The historic heart of the city lies in the Altstadt, or Old Town. This beautiful area was almost entirely rebuilt in a traditional style after the Second World War, and is today affectionately referred to as 'the longest bar in the world' due to having over 260 drinking spots, making it a great place to head for an unforgettable night out.

During the day, explore local churches, like the Sankt Lambertus Basilika, or see one of the oldest parts of the city, the Castle Tower, and its Schiffahrtsmuseum, which is widely considered as Germany's finest marine museum.

With so many painters, sculptors and musicians drawn to Düsseldorf, the city's vibrant art scene is an essential part of any visit here. See the work of local and international artists at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen art museum or at the excellent Museum Kunstpalast, which are both within walking distance from the Old Town.

Take a Guided Tour

One of the best things to do in Düsseldorf is to take a guided tour so that you can make the most of your visit, and there are lots of different options to choose from so you can make sure it’s tailored to your interests.

Guided tours give you the opportunity to learn about the history, architecture, and top places to visit from a local, which makes it even more authentic and means that you won’t miss anything during your trip.

Fancy something a bit different? Take to the streets on one of the many Segway tours available in the city instead and see the sights from two wheels.

Düsseldorf Green Spaces

As the seventh largest city in Germany, Düsseldorf contains plenty of great green spaces where you can wind down when you need a break from exploring.

To the south of the historic district is the gorgeous Schloss Benrath, an exquisite pink Baroque Palace surrounded by manicured gardens, flowing fountains, and colourful flowerbeds, which offers a stunning place to wander around.

For a peaceful day out, head to one of the city’s many parks. The 68-acre Hofgarten stretches from the Rhine to the Old Town and is home to flowerbeds, and pond, and a bandstand, or treat yourself to a chilled out picnic in the Nordpark's secret Japanese Garden – the perfect place to unwind.
