Enjoy some time as a couple in the Black Forest

The Black Forest is the perfect location if you love being outdoors and you’re looking for an active romantic getaway in Germany. The Black Forest is a well-known destination for cycling holidays, with a mixture of cycle routes available for you to try, for all abilities. The most popular being a week-long route that starts and ends in the historic town of Freiburg.

This destination is also a great place for hiking, with the Triberg Falls being one of the most popular places to navigate to on foot in Germany. All of this exercise will definitely work up an appetite and we would hugely recommend stopping of at Lake Titisee and visiting one of their cafes for a romantic meal or an ice cream.

Love locks on a bridge in Cologne, Germany

Leave a love lock in Cologne

We couldn’t possibly write a guide about a romantic getaway in Germany without mentioning the tradition of leaving a love lock on Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne.

To take part in this great tradition, you just need to add a personalised lock to your list of things to pack and attach it to the bridge as a sign of your everlasting love. Then throw the key into the Rhine, like tens of thousands of couples before you!

The best thing is Cologne is only a three hour drive from Rotterdam port with the option to stop of at loads of popular towns and cities on the way.

Romantic getaway in Frankfurt

We love the city of Frankfurt, it's full of character and charm that you'll be sure to enjoy as you explore this fantastic city. The half-timber medieval houses look like they've been plucked straight out of a fairy tale, especially over the winter period when it snows.

There are plenty of heritage sites for you to explore, but a favourite is the Cathedral of Kasierdom that stretches high up into the sky.

Once you've explored this beautiful city, head over to Old Sachsenhausen. Home to many cafes, bars, bistros and charming restaurants, you'll certainly be spoilt for choice with places to eat. You can even shop for some traditional local delights, including pork knuckle and sauerkraut, or delicious chicken schnitzel.
